"My teacher friend requested me on Facebook?" I wondered incredulously, as the days before classes started dwindled down. I've experienced technology used for posting assignments an e-mailing questions, but I'd never really thought I'd be taught on Facebook! Social networks such as Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube are being implemented by teachers as a way to connect with their students outside of the classroom. The times are changing, and as our world keeps progressing, our modes of teaching have to progress as well.
I'll have you know that my teacher friend requested me only after I joined his group for our class. If this wasn't the case, I'd be a little weirded out. But I think it's great that teachers are going outside of the classroom and using sources other than a whiteboard or powerpoint to teach us. Most of us students spend most of our time on the computer anyway, so why not meet us where we're at? I guess, as with all change, it will take some time to get used to completing assignments online. It's easy to get lazy and procrastinate with online assignments, knowing that you can submit it at the last minute and don't really need to have it ready by the beginning of class, so that's one thing I need to check myself on.
Not only is social networks easy to access, but it they're also a great place to have a class outside of the classroom. With sites such as Twitter and Facebook, students are able to connect with their teachers and fellow classmates all at once. Some people may not like to see a picture of their professor among their friends list, but I don't mind it. What have I got to hide?
